Lucerne, Switzerland: Lake Views, Historic Streets and a Luxury Palace Hotel
Lucerne is one of those Swiss destinations where lakeside scenery, historic architecture and mountain views come together in one beautiful setting. Located in central Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Lucerne, the city offers a mix of cultural attractions, scenic walks and easy access to the surrounding Alpine landscape.
In this guide, we're revisiting our stay and sharing a few places to consider adding to your own Lucerne itinerary.
Discovering Lucerne
One of Lucerne's biggest attractions is its setting. The city sits beside Lake Lucerne, with the Swiss Alps providing a dramatic backdrop. You can explore the historic centre on foot, enjoy the waterfront or use the city as a base for excursions into the surrounding mountains.
Lucerne is also known for its preserved historic landmarks and traditional architecture. Its compact centre makes it a good option for travellers who want to experience Swiss history and scenery without planning a packed itinerary.
Although we only captured a small part of the city during our visit, there are several attractions worth considering when planning your own trip.
Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower
Chapel Bridge, known locally as Kapellbrücke, is one of Lucerne's most recognisable landmarks. This covered wooden bridge dates back to the 14th century and crosses the Reuss River, connecting parts of the historic centre.
Its painted interior panels and distinctive roof make it an interesting stop for anyone interested in architecture and history. The nearby Water Tower is another important feature of the city's historic skyline.
It's an ideal place to include on a walking route through Lucerne's Old Town.
The Lion Monument
The Lion Monument is a sculpture carved into a natural rock face, commemorating Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution. Its solemn expression and detailed carving make it one of the city's most significant historical sights.
If you enjoy learning about the stories behind a destination, this is a worthwhile addition to your itinerary.
Take a Boat Trip on Lake Lucerne
For a different perspective of the region, consider taking a boat trip on Lake Lucerne. Cruises offer views of the surrounding mountains, shoreline and lakeside communities, making them a relaxing way to appreciate the landscape.
Depending on the time you have available, you could combine a cruise with a mountain excursion or simply enjoy time on the water.
For current routes and schedules, check the official Lake Lucerne Navigation Company website before your visit.
Staying at the Historic Palace Hotel
The hotel's history dates back to 1906, when Swiss entrepreneur Franz Josef Bucher established it as a luxurious lakeside retreat. Its Belle Époque architecture reflects the elegance of an era when grand European hotels were destinations in their own right.
The building's location was a major part of its appeal, with the lake and surrounding scenery creating a memorable setting for a stay in Lucerne.
The restoration preserved elements of its historic character while introducing contemporary design and modern luxury. Today, the hotel continues to combine its Belle Époque heritage with its prominent lakeside location.
You can explore current accommodation options and facilities on the official Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern website.
Is Lucerne Worth Visiting?
Lucerne is worth considering if you'd like to combine a historic city break with time in nature. You can spend the morning exploring the Old Town, visit a historic landmark, walk beside the lake or plan an excursion into the mountains.
The city also works well for travellers who prefer a flexible itinerary. You don't need to fill every day with organised activities to appreciate the scenery and atmosphere.
For a first visit, I'd consider allowing time for Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument and a walk along the waterfront. If your schedule allows, a Lake Lucerne cruise could be another lovely addition.
